Could AI Help Solve Our Mental Health Crisis? (2023)

The National Institute of Mental Health reports potential in using mental health apps with AI in the following six areas:

  • Social support (connecting you with people like you anonymously as well as helping you to manage social situations with prompts)
  • Cognitive improvement (encouraging greater awareness of cognitive thought patterns such as rumination)
  • Skills training
  • Symptom tracking
  • Passive data collection (aggregating data to show you trends and help you spot oncoming symptoms or other problems)
  • Self-management, per one report. (To help you understand how well you are managaing your self-care—exercise, sleep, diet—for overall wellness and for purposes of symptom control)

The higher the patient engagement and self-monitoring and the easier it was to use, the greater the likelihood of its efficacy compared to traditional psychiatric treatment.

People in crisis are likely more vulnerable because in a desperate attempt to get help, it may be more difficult to discern if they are speaking to a chatbot who is helping them, or connecting with a robot sounds like a human but who may be causing harm due to their lack of ability to manage or address a serious mental health problem.
