Work Synergy & Effectiveness
#Assistant
(Jan 24, 2025)
#Q: I'm reading a book on entrepreneurship (Buy Back You Time by Dan Martell). The author suggested that the business owner should let everyone in the team to know a single number that indicate how well he or she is doing, very much like how the occupancy rate of a hotel tells the popularity of the hotel. For my online live-streaming show what "magic number" would you suggest? Below are some number I can think of and their issues as a chief indicator of the effectiveness of my shows.
- Number of live audience: It has been low since day one because many people prefer to watch a long-format show at their own convenience.
- Number of reactions to my Facebook post announcing the next show's schedule: This has been good (up to ten for 1.7k of total followers) but those who Like the post may not come for watching despite they recognize my work.
- Total number of views for re-play: This has been good and can be very satisfactory with ad promotion. But just like most long-form contents the duration can be from 1 to a few minutes only.
- Total number of minutes watched: A very difficult to pursuit figure as said above.
- Number of website visitors: A metric that I seldom track. Most visitors come from Facebook ad.
- Amount of reactions to my Facebook ad: This has been very good as long as I run the ad at appropriate timing (Sat morning and after have been particularly good. Very poor on weekdays).
The purpose of my show is for audience to feel relaxed and to prepare them for their other off-work activities. I'm looking for creative ways to measure the effectiveness of such a preparatory work.
#A: Selecting a "magic number" to measure the effectiveness of your online live-streaming show can be crucial for understanding your impact and guiding your strategy. Given your goals and the issues with the metrics you've considered, here are some suggestions:
#Suggested "Magic Number"
#1. Engagement Rate of Replays
- Formula: Total minutes watched / Total views
- Why This Works: This number gives insight into how engaged your audience is with the content post-show. It helps you understand not just how many people are watching, but also how long they are staying engaged with the material.
#2. Audience Retention Rate
- Formula: (Average watch time / Total duration of the show) x 100
- Why This Works: This metric shows what percentage of your audience stays for the entire show. A higher retention rate indicates that your content is resonating well with viewers, which is particularly important for a show designed to relax and prepare them.
#3. Post-Show Feedback Score
- How to Implement: After each show, you could send out a quick survey asking viewers to rate their experience on a scale (e.g., 1-10) and gather qualitative feedback.
- Why This Works: This direct feedback can give you insights into how well your show is meeting its purpose of relaxation and preparation.
- Formula: (Total reactions + Shares + Comments) / Total followers
- Why This Works: This metric captures how well your audience is engaging with your promotional content and community interactions, indicating the overall interest in your shows.
#5. Repeat Viewership Rate
- How to Implement: Track how many unique viewers come back for subsequent shows.
- Why This Works: This indicates loyalty and interest in your content. If viewers return, it suggests they find value in the experience you're providing.
#Considerations
- Focus on Quality Over Quantity: Given your audience’s preference for long-format content at their convenience, prioritizing engagement and retention metrics can provide a clearer picture of your show's impact.
- Iterate Based on Feedback: Use the data you collect to adjust your content and approach. Engaging with your audience through surveys or social media can also help foster a community feel.
- Communicate Your "Magic Number": Once you choose your metric, communicate it to your team. This creates a shared understanding of success and focuses efforts on improving that number.
#Conclusion
Among these options, Engagement Rate of Replays or Audience Retention Rate might serve as strong indicators of your show's effectiveness in fulfilling its purpose. They provide meaningful insights into how well your audience is connecting with your content, aligning with your goal of helping them feel relaxed and prepared.
#Q: While I agreed with your analysis let me clarify more about my goals. That might help you to suggest ONE single number that is easy to track and highly relevant:
Goals:
- Potential audiences become interested in my upcoming show (What topic?)
- Those who find the topic relevant spend time to watch live or recorded replays.
- Those who have watched find the content both entertaining and inspirational. It's okay if some never find one single topic relevant to their life (Everyone grows at different places).
- No matter whether one has watched my show or not, or how many times they have watched, the key is for them to remember the existing of such a show and to come back when they feel needed.
Given your clarified goals, it seems that you want a single metric that encompasses interest, engagement, and long-term recall of your show. Based on this, I recommend focusing on:
#Engagement Rate of Upcoming Show Announcements
Formula: (Total reactions + Comments + Shares on the announcement post) / Total followers
#Why This Number?
- Interest Indicator: This metric directly reflects how many people are engaging with your promotional content for upcoming shows, indicating their interest in the topics you present.
- Relevance and Recall: High engagement shows that your audience finds the topics relevant and memorable, which aligns with your goal of them coming back when they feel the need.
- Simplicity: It's easy to track using your social media analytics, allowing you to quickly gauge audience interest without diving into more complex metrics.
- Direct Feedback: Comments can provide qualitative insights into what topics resonate, helping you refine future content.
By focusing on this engagement rate, you can create a clear connection between your promotional efforts and audience interest, ultimately guiding your content strategy and fostering long-term viewer recall.
#Q: Thank you! This is what I want - a single easy-to-track metric that indicates recall. Wonderful!
