I called my healing approach "Cross-cultural healing" which is delivered through a serious of online and physical shows sharing Japanese songs and other cultural products and use their underlying message to influence our perception and understanding of our circumstances and inner world.
Below is the model: (Note: Point 4 has research support, aka. Diabetes is actually developing according to the subjective time of the patient. )
She shared that people in Thailand are less worrying about the future. I said, "因為佢地時間壓力少,香港人時間係好大制約。日本人係集體主義,時間安心俾公司嘅。香港人左右都要兼顧,要Work-life Balance,於是焦慮".
She responded further to my model, "道理其實一直在,如果你信的話,四圍嘅嘢會輕咗". Here she began to touch the concept of Faith. I said, 其實就咁信係好難,要加啲載體。我用日本文化做載體,或者用科學理論做載體,係因為聖經講的嘢一係未發生,一係超越正常感受,唔會就咁信到。 聖經叫你「睇」啲麻雀,即係唔係盲信,係要觀察,而科學就係觀察。所以,理性可以支持信心".

Some of the key ideas from Han:
As for ways out proposed by Han and other thinkers:
Han suggests the need to recover a sense of limits, boundaries and healthier relationship to time, work and achievement. He advocates more contemplative modes of being and rejecting the toxic positivity of "can do" thinking.
Other philosophers like Michael Foucault and the Italian autonomist thinkers pointed to practices of "de-subjectification" - finding lines of flight from subjectivizing power and reclaiming new spaces of autonomy and ways of living.
The French philosopher Gilles Deleuze advocated crafting "lines of escape" and cultivating alternative modes of existence beyond the constrictive subjectivities imposed by modern power.
So while critiquing the pernicious forms of subjection in modern life, Han and other thinkers suggest the importance of exploring new practices of self-limitation, contemplation and autonomy as potential pathways to resist burnout and overwork.
Lines of Flight For Deleuze, a "line of flight" refers to a path of mutation and creative deterritorialization that allows one to escape constraining contexts or subjectivities. It's about finding a "way out" that breaks from established patterns and opens up new modes of existence.
Rhizomes vs Arborescent Thought Deleuze contrasted the rhizome (with its horizontal, spreading, non-hierarchical growth) against arborescent (tree-like) modes of thought and organization. Rhizomes represent multiplicity and non-linear pathways for thinking and living differently.
Deterritorialization This involves the undoing of rigid boundaries and territories, whether physical, psychic, social or intellectual. It frees up the potential for new emergent experiences outside established codes.
Nomadism Deleuze valorized the figure of the nomad who refuses static, sedentary existence in favor of mobility and repositioning. The nomad explores smooth spaces of potential between striating, regulated spaces.
Becoming vs Being Against fixed identities and states of being, Deleuze emphasized constant processes of "becoming" - transformative flows that open up alternative subject positions and ways of life.
His thought points to cultivating a nomadic consciousness and charting "lines of flight" beyond conforming subjectivities and power relations. It's about plugging into the multiplicities and fluxes that unravel rigid identities and forms of social organization.
Anna was a high-powered management consultant who had internalized the ethos of constant optimization, overwork and personal branding. She prided herself on always being available to clients, pulling all-nighters, and Never saying no to new projects to get ahead.
However, after years of this relentless cycle, she experienced a breaking point - a period of complete mental and physical exhaustion. Her self-worth had become entirely defined by her job performance.
In this crisis state, Anna started questioning the assumptions and codes that had been driving her life. She realized she had become trapped in an oppressive system of her own making, compulsively submitting to capitalist acceleration.
Anna decided to take a sabbatical and travel for self-discovery. On this journey, she was exposed to radically different ways of relating to time, work and life itself from indigenous communities.
She learned practices of mindfulness, contemplation and being present that allowed her to deconstruct her ingrained achievement narratives. Anna started "deterritorializing" from the regulated subjectivity that had been choking her vitality.
Inspired by these nomadic perspectives, Anna broke from her corporate career path. She downsized her material possessions and took up more meaningful but financially modest work that allowed her to live with greater balance.
In this way, Anna charted a "line of flight" from the burnout society - drawing from alternative wisdoms and uncoding herself from the stifling pursuit of hyper-performance and success.
And you're absolutely right that this is an immense challenge - fundamentally transforming the bigger cultures and socio-economic systems that produce burnout on a mass scale. Some of the limitations of focusing just on individual escapes include:
Privilege Required - The ability to "drop out" or radically alter one's lifestyle requires a certain degree of economic, social and cultural capital not available to all.
Unsustainable at Scale - If too many people try to fully disengage from productive roles in society, it could create other dysfunctions and instabilities.
Reinforcing the System - Those still enmeshed in the system continue reproducing the same oppressive cultures and subjectivities.
Lack of Collective Power - Dispersed individual strategies don't accumulate the political and social force required for structural changes.
So while mapping personal "lines of flight" provides relief and models alternatives, the philosophers you cited also pointed to the need for more collective, organized resistance and prefigurative politics to fundamentally reshape the burnout/performance cultures.
This could take the form of workplace democracies, new policy frameworks, social movements, counter-cultures, and fundamentally different production models not oriented around endless growth/acceleration. Individual practices are important, but likely need to be coupled with broader institutional and cultural transformations to truly overcome burnout on a societal level.
